Term 1 Week 8 Learning Log

MONDAY
We are learning a new topic this week. Its about Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare :] I think I'm really growing to love Shakespeare's works ^^ The story of Romeo and Juliet is a really famous story and I bet many people already know about it. After a brief summary of Romeo and Juliet by Mr Chua, we were told to work in pairs. Register 1-10 was told to do a character's traits of Romeo, while the rest of the class was given a different character. Then Mr Chua let us watch a short clip from Romeo and Juliet which was really similar to the script, and it was really nice to see a real play from Shakespeare even though those actors are from the modern times :] Ha ha ^^ I thought that i might as well pay very good attention to the clip and remember all those points, and write them down for when i do the character's traits. In one scene, where Romeo kisses Juliet, Mr Chua came flying towards the screen and wanted to block us from seeing them kiss. ^^ Ha ha :] I think it was really funny that Mr Chua would do that since his personality let me thinks that he's quite serious about work and doesn't have a sense of humor (No Offence, Just a cold joke....) ! I think Mr Chua should crack more jokes with the class so that the lessons would not be so boring. Well, even though the lessons seem quite fun already, it’s important to keep the class lively. ^^ And so, we were also given a piece of A4 paper before the lesson ended. With that paper, we have to draw a mind-map about the previous individual work that we combined with our partner’s work. Plus, we have to decorate it as nice as we can, because this piece of work will be graded with marks for our CA. We will have to hand it up to Mr Chua by next Monday.

FRIDAY
* Normal lessons *
We were given back our Qualities Of Mercy worksheet when Mr Chua came into the classroom. Then we discussed about the four kinds of Gods from different religion. The first is the Buddhism, then Christianity, then the Hindusm, and lastly the Islam/Muslims. For every religion, we have to stand up and answer for our own religion that why is our God merciful. For the Buddhist, Ebony volunteered to answer why the Buddhist God is merciful. Her explanation was quite long but very inspiring . I think it is important for us to respect other people’s religion and their Gods. And as for me, I’m a Christian. ^^ I did think about volunteering to answer for the Christian, but I was one of the quietest student in our class and since only one or two of my friends encouraged me, I don’t have enough courage to speak up for now… But if there are still some more lesson about religion or our Gods, for i promise i will speak up for my religion and God. ^^ He he :] And the same goes for the Muslims. As for the Hinduism, Mr Chua provided the answer for us because he did not want to force the free thinkers to “squeeze their brain-juice too much”, ha ha ^^

After that, we were given out a handout about the ‘Imagery’ in Romeo and Juliet. That particular hand-out was how Romeo described Juliet and Mr Chua explained some of the lines to us and told us to write down the basic meaning. ^^ And then we are going to continue later during the make-up session.

* Make-Up Session *
During this Make-Up session, we were told to gather our literature files with our scripts inside and other stuffs, and our pencil cases and lined up outside in pairs. After which, we then moved to the movers and shakers gallery and we had to find a partner for our self for the “pairs work”. After all was settled, we were each given a worksheet to answer, in pairs, before the bell rang, or when the time was up. We were told that the answers could be found in the movers and shakers gallery, the hall of our founding fathers history. My partner and I were the second to finish and we got to have a free time to chit – chat, even though I kept quiet throughout It … But after the bell rang, we saw that most of our schoolmates have gone home, my partner, Regine, began to get impatient. She began to shout out loud, “ Everyone quickly finish leh! I still want my Friday, my Saturday and my Sunday leh!!!! “ Well, all was not in proper English I’m afraid (No Offence Regine! Just doing my Homework, sorry!). In the end, everyone finally finished. After some important briefing about the ‘Imagery’ worksheet and the form that we had to show to our parents, Mr Chua finally let us go. ^^ He he:] It was the most tiring day I had that week, but also the fun in Literature ^^

Term 1 Week 7 Learning Log

On Friday, we had our last lesson of week 7. Mr Chua had reminded us to bring our friends address the week before. He said that we were able to send out letters to our friend during international friendship day if we get our friends address in time :]. I did ~ and I am really glad that my friend would be able to receive the letter that I have prepared for her :], and to let her know that she has been a great friend since I have known her ^^, but I'm not sure about one thing, I wanted to know if the letter is only meant for the people in our class or if we can just send it to any friends we like ...

After that we proceeded to continue our lesson on The Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. And again, I was called out to answer one question that i thought was quite similar to the question I had answered before. I had the intention of saying the same answer again, but I think I didn't listen carefully, because when I answered Mr Chua said that I didn't go home and study the scene. I did of course, but I can't remember all of it because the question paper had already been handed back to him.
And so, the lesson went really nice and fun :], plus it was interesting too ^^. Soon we will be starting Romeo and Juliet, I think.... I'm not sure as all my friends have already updated their learning log and all of them posted Romeo and Juliet's picture up there, so this makes me wonder if i have missed any lessons based on this...

Hope to continue such an interesting lesson again, I really enjoyed my literature lesson ~!

Term 1 Week 6 Learning Log

Due to the Chinese New Year celebration on Friday, we had our last lesson on Monday. And during our last lesson, we were learning about the other scene in The Merchant Of Venice by William Shakespeare of the characters in it. We were suppose to read about the scene and then answer the question below. After that, Mr Chua will call some of us up to tell the whole class about what we had written.
I was quite shocked when Mr Chua called me up, I never thought that the first 'lucky' person to be called up would be me! Seow Hui Min was snickering at me when she heard me being called up. I was really scared about speaking out loud and my volume was quite low when I answered, but only after a few seconds I finally had the confidence to speak louder, and after a few more people, Seow Hui Min got her chance too. ^^
Her volume was even lower than mine :] and I learnt that you will get what you deserve if you laugh at people. Haha. :]
After that exercise we did some more things on The Merchant of Venice. I am really happy that I finally have the confidence to speak out loud. ^^

Term 1 Week 5 Learning Log

About Literature :

Reading and writing are closely inter-related with the study of Literature. Literature represents a language or a people: culture and tradition. But, literature is more important than just a historical or cultural artifact. Literature introduces us to new worlds of experience. It has many meanings but the word literature may mean large tomes of words and stories that have become classics over time however this is only one definition of literature. There are still many more meaning of literature. Literature comes from that Latin word littera, when directly translated means letter.
Literature, embraces all compositions in writing or print which preserve the results of observation, thought, or fancy; but those upon the positive sciences are usually excluded.
Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means "acquaintance with letters", and therefore the academic study of literature is known as Letters.
